Our History

St. Michael’s School for the Blind, Ranchi is one of the oldest and most respected institutions dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of visually challenged children in the region. The school was established on 29th September 1898, with the noble vision of providing education, dignity, and self-reliance to children who are blind.
From its very beginning, the institution has worked with the belief that visual impairment should never become a barrier to learning, growth, or contribution to society. Over the decades, St. Michael’s School has grown into a center of hope for hundreds of children who otherwise would have remained deprived of educational opportunities.
The school received recognition from the Bihar Government Education Department as a Middle School before the year 1949, and was also declared a Minority Institution, ensuring continued support for its educational mission. After the formation of the state of Jharkhand, the institution continued its services from Ranchi, becoming an integral part of the educational landscape of the state.
St. Michael’s School for the Blind operates under the guidance of the C.N.I. Church, Chotanagpur Diocese, and is administered by a dedicated School Management Committee. The institution has always functioned primarily through the generous support of donors and well-wishers, reflecting strong community involvement in its mission.
The core objective of the school has remained unchanged: to provide complete development to visually impaired children. Along with academic education, the school emphasizes physical, mental, moral, and spiritual development, and offers vocational training in practical skills such as bamboo and cane work, weaving, and garment production. This holistic approach ensures that students leave the institution equipped not only with knowledge, but also with the ability to earn an independent livelihood and live with confidence and dignity.
The school is a residential institution, welcoming both boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 10, without discrimination of caste, class, or background. At present, dozens of students receive education and care at the school, supported by committed teachers and staff members who work tirelessly to nurture each child’s potential.
Through more than a century of service, St. Michael’s School for the Blind, Ranchi has remained steadfast in its mission of empowerment, inclusion, and social responsibility. It continues to stand as a beacon of hope for visually challenged children across Jharkhand and neighboring regions, transforming lives and strengthening communities.
