St Michaels School for the Blind

St. Michael’s School for the Blind, located in Bahu Bazar, Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a renowned institution dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of visually impaired children. Since its establishment in 1973, the school has stood as a symbol of compassion, empowerment, and inclusive education in the region.

Our History

The school was founded by the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel, a religious congregation committed to social service and value-based education. It began with a small group of students and staff trained in special education, aiming to provide blind children—especially from economically weaker backgrounds—with access to quality education and a dignified life.
Over the years, St. Michael’s has expanded in scope and strength, becoming one of the few institutions in Jharkhand that specialize in the care and development of visually impaired students. It has consistently evolved with the changing needs of special education, integrating modern tools while retaining a strong moral foundation.

Every day at St. Michael’s School for the Blind is a blessing—filled with the energy of determined students and the promise of a new day to overcome challenges and shine

Vision Statement

St. Michael’s School for the Blind envisions a society where every child, regardless of visual ability, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and lead an independent life. Our mission is to educate, empower, and integrate visually impaired children into mainstream society, guided by values of love, dignity, and service.

How the School Operates

St. Michael’s School for the Blind is run as a semi-government institution, managed by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters in collaboration with the Government of Jharkhand. While the administrative and teaching staff are partly supported by government aid, the school also relies on charitable contributions, church support, and donations from well-wishers to meet its full operational needs.
Key features of the school’s functioning include:
Curriculum: The school follows the Jharkhand State Board curriculum (JCERT), adapted for inclusive students using Braille, audio learning, and assistive technologies.
Inclusive Education: Emphasis is placed on academic learning, life skills, mobility training, music, and vocational skills—ensuring holistic development.
Residential Facility: It is a fully residential school, providing free or subsidized food, accommodation, and medical care to students from rural and underprivileged communities.
Training in Assistive Technology: Students are trained in Braille literacy from an early stage, and gradually introduced to modern tools such as screen readers and tactile learning devices.
Support System: The school functions with the support of both public funding and private philanthropy. Regular health check-ups, counseling, and extracurricular activities ensure a well-rounded environment.
